The Henley Classic is a 2.1km endurance swim upstream in the River Thames, following the route of the Henley rowing regatta. Our day started with a 3am wake-up call, walking in the dark to the race start, watching a beautiful sunrise surrounded by the 900 other swimmers before getting on with the swim. We didn’t drown, or come last, both of which we thought were distinct possibilities before the race started…
We immediately felt the effect of the ‘upstream’ aspect of the swim and soon realised it wouldn’t be as easy going as swimming in a pool! The first quarter of a mile marker took an age to cross and fear set in that this may take longer than planned! However, we did finish it and we did enjoy it so it wasn’t all bad!
