The following post has been sent in by Kate Simpson, one of our lovely trustees. Whilst we were completing the end of the LEJOG cycle challenge, Kate along with Remembering Not to Forget supporter Georgina McMasters, undertook a swimming challenge by completing the Thames Marathon.
The Thames Marathon
Apologies for the interruption but I wanted to update you – the swimming extravaganza is over! Yesterday Georgina and I completed the Thames Marathon – 14kms from Henley to Marlow in 4hrs 56mins (including gracefully hopping out at locks where we stuffed ourselves with high glucose gels and, in my case, jelly beans so obviously without those breaks we would have been so much faster). Georgie’s Garmin said it was 13.334km which means we must have taken the racing line… I have attached some delightful before, during and after shots.
Support
I really appreciate all the support we have had whether though Facebook, text message, email or in person. Also a huge thanks to everyone who sponsored – there has been a reason for the madness and that is to raise money for Remembering Not to Forget, a small charity set up at the end of 2013 to support people impacted by dementia. Founders, Ali and Laura, who both have close family members with dementia and wanted to help other families affected by the condition, have, along with Laura’s husband, Jon, just completed a two week cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats which involved concussions, broken bike seats, frayed break cables, dreadful weather and more mountains than can be counted.
Thank You
Apologies if I have not said thanks directly for the sponsorship either it is because (a) I am rude (quite likely); or (b) if a donation is anonymous the website doesn’t even tell the person raising the money.
If you still want to donate that would be lovely and you can do so online.

A massive thank you to Julie Dennis who walked the entire route and met us at each stop with our supplies. Also, thank you to the incredible Georgina McMasters who made sure I didn’t just stop swimming less than 2kms from the end and dealt with stupid questions like “how do you deflate a tow float?” and “what if I drown?”. She is now tapering for the Reykjavik marathon – just one of the 10 marathons she is running this year for Remembering Not To Forget.
